Liquid crystals exhibit one or more additional phases between the liquid and the solid state. In a liquid crystalline phase, order (solid state property) is combined with mobility of the molecules (liquid property). This unique property makes liquid crystals suitable for all kinds of electro-optical applications, such as LCD’s and LED’s.
A special class of liquid crystalline materials consists of disc-shaped molecules with a flat and rigid (aromatic) core, surrounded by one or more flexible side chains. Liquid crystals (LC’s) exhibit one ore more additional phases between the liquid and the solid state. This unique property makes liquid crystals suitable for all kinds of electro-optical applications, such as LCD’s and LED’s. A special class of liquid crystalline materials consists of disc-shaped molecules with a flat and rigid (aromatic) core, surrounded by one or more flexible side chains. Common mesophases for these materials are from an almost liquid system to an almost solid material.
