The research project is aimed at developing the fundamental elements for the design, simulation and testing of a high-temperature coating system for aerospace jet engines. To this end, it is crucial to obtain detailed knowledge about the thermal, mechanical and chemical processes occurring within the coating/substrate system during its life span. The research in this project is divided into two parts: 1) numerical models are developed for the prediction and assessment of HT coating system durability and lifetime; 2) the materials science aspects of HT coating systems are studied (e,g. oxidation, microstructure evolution, internal stresses, and failure mechanisms).
These materials aspects provide crucial input and validation for the numerical simulations.
