Imaging and adaptive optics

The research activities cover the application of (newly developed) methods and tools for modeling, measurement and control to practical problems in various fields of physics. One of the target application domains is formed by physical imaging systems. It is shown how a quantitative model-based approach, accompanied by statistical experimental design, allows precise measurement of the atomic structure of materials from electron microscopy images. Furthermore, optimal statistical tests are developed for the detection of neural activity by means of functional magnetic resonance imaging. We also apply modern control strategies to adaptive optics systems, with emphasis on ground-based telescopes.
