Due to environmental regulations in the automotive production procedures the use of solvent-based lacquer systems is under growing pressure.
As a consequence there is a need for less environmental burdening alternatives. From this environmental point of view the industry is looking for solvent free lacquer systems. Especially water-based systems are of interest. These contain substantially less organic solvent and are easy to produce. A disadvantage is that up till now they contain components that are far more expensive than the components of solvent based lacquer systems. Moreover, it is harder (and therefore more expensive) to obtain the same product quality as with solvent based lacquer systems.
The goal is the development of an innovative technology for water borne lacquer resin systems, resulting in automotive coatings with a superior mix of material and application properties, and at economically favourable prices.
