Investigating the potential of offshore wind farms

The development of offshore wind farms is supported by research institute’s R&D department, from the earliest phase of location selection through to operations. For the location selection and measurement phases, Institute conducts research into meteorology and prediction models. The limited availability of accurate offshore measurement data means that institute also conducts extensive research into meteorological masts, measurement equipment and remote sensing. Becoming more and more important in supporting conventional meteorological masts and in the future could replace the need for fixed (sea-bed) meteorological masts. Public acceptance and environmental issues are also addressed, such as bird monitoring, noise emissions and characterisation of social areas.
