Joining and mechanical behaviour

Research focuses on development and improvement of the understanding of mechanical behaviour and materials joining by means of numerical and physical models and experimental techniques, underpinned by a fundamental understanding of the metallurgical and physical processes involved. Key issues: Mechanical behaviour ( plasticity, fracture toughness,
fatigue, environmentally assisted cracking, impact damage).
Joining technology (connectivity of weld modelling, physics of weld and welding process phenomena, mass and energy transport, improvement of welding processes, influence of welding on material performance).
Modelling activities are primarily focused on the identification of significant physical factors influencing material performance, including microstructure, crack sensitivity, residual stresses and distortion.
