Micro-structured materials offer considerable potential in a variety of applications ranging from bio-medical (materials facilitating controlled release of substances) to chemical (new catalysts types offering superior contacting (wetting) properties or new structured packings for multiphase contacting) and food (structured food improving taste, appearance and (flow) properties through altered micro-structure). A key element in this research is the development of efficient and cost-effective (non-clean room) fabrication methods (for instance laser-based or membrane-based) for the tailor-made production of these materials.
