Research: carbon based hard coatings are known as “Diamond Like Carbon” (DLC). The properties of DLC coatings vary with manufacturing method. The present understanding is that the clustersize of the sp3 “particles” in the coating determines the hardness. We deposit “DLC” type coatings in a parallel plate reactor. By varying the carbon content in the coating we intend to elucidate the microstructure-properties relation.
