We study the epitaxial growth of nanoscale semiconductors. We emphasize on the lateral ordering, position, and shape control of semiconductor quantum dots which is a key challenge in today’s nanomaterials research. To achieve this goal we have developed a new concept for quantum dot ordering which is based on self-organized anisotropic strain engineering of strained layer superlattice templates. Moreover we have succeeded in the formation of quantum dots emitting in the important 1.55-µm wavelength region and apply them in semiconductor lasers and amplifiers revealing distinct novel functionalities.
