Networked control systems

The rapid advances in communication technologies offer unprecedented opportunities for the control of complex high-tech systems and of large-scale plants.
The usage of wired and especially wireless communication networks in control systems offer many benefits such as the ease of maintenance and installation, the large flexibility, the ability to distribute the control system and the possibility to measure in possibly harsh environments. However, still many issues need to be resolved before all the advantages of these so-called “networked control systems (NCSs)” can be harvested. In particular, the control over a network induces various communication imperfections like packet dropouts caused by the unreliability of the network; variable sampling/transmission intervals; variable communication delays/latencies; communication constraints caused by the sharing of the network by multiple nodes and the fact that only one node is allowed to transmit its packet per transmission.
