Operations management in hospitals

Increasingly, Dutch hospitals use interventions originating from operations management and operations research to improve service levels and logistics of their organizations. It is, however, not very clear what choices are made on what grounds in this field, leading to a situation wherein organizations might “reinvent the wheel” in certain circumstances.
Development of a framework in which certain types of problems/challenges that hospitals face can be linked to types of solutions that should be preferred. In order to do a first step towards such a framework, an inventory should be made on what is presently done under certain circumstances.
For instance when there are problems with access in the outpatient department, the capacity of the radiology diagnostic department, or with the planning in the operation rooms, which analytic techniques and what type of solutions are chosen and what is the nature of the “lasting” results.
