The last decade has seen photonics mature from a niche technology in the field of telecommunications to fully mature technology with even its own killer applications: namely Solid State lighting and solar. This maturity has led to the emergence of several new application fields where photonics can be of key importance. The most interesting and dynamic of these new fields is photonic sensing, where new ideas such as OCT, Raman spectroscopy and integrated photonics based sensors are driving the field to deliver new systems. The field has therefore matured enough for specialized niche players to enter.
