Physics of nano-electronics

The small scale of nanoscience requires a study of electronic transport as a quantum phenomenon. However, it also means that the transport processes occurring in the nano-devices become exceedingly fast moving the response from the GHz range into the THz range.
In addition a new generation of solid state lasers is emerging providing coherent radiation into the THz range. This evolution coincides with a strong drive in astronomical and atmospheric research to use the THz range for new scientific instruments to study planetary atmospheres and stellar evolution.
The research program focuses on the physical processes in these new instruments. In practice it means that a thorough knowledge of condensed matter physics and thin-film technology is needed, combined with an interest in the needs from an instrumental point of view.
