Research institute conducts research into the environmental risks associated with the use and reuse of polluted materials, in particular the ‘leaching’ of pollutants. Leaching is the flushing away of pollutants (for example heavy metals) when a material comes into contact with water or rain water. Assessing possible leaching of pollutants is important for such things as recycling wastes such as building materials, or responsible dumping of wastes when these cannot be recycled.
