Rotating fluid flow in hydraulic turbomachines, rotational phase separators and ultra-centrifuges poses a number of challenging problems: how should turbulence be modelled in a strongly rotating configuration, what is the effect of Coriolis and centrifugal forces on the flow field, and how does the fluid respond to time dependent variations. Research comprises a combination of numerical analysis, semi-analytic methods and experiments. Objective is to generate general results which are sufficiently accurate to warrant application in process equipment.
