Synthetic biology

Synthetic biology is a novel research direction where one views the biological cell as a system of ‘biobrick’ components.
Engineering this system is now possible with the tools of cell biology, molecular biology, and biochemistry in hand. Using such an approach, it is now becoming possible to engineer artificial networks in cells. Ideas are emerging to create cellular modules or even partly or fully artificial cells. The latter could be used for instance in the engineering of bacteria for hydrogen production.
