Thermally sensitive hydrogels for tissue engineering

Tissue engineering is a revolutionary strategy to treat patients who need a new organ or tissue. Generally this strategy is utilized through culturing cells within biodegradable polymer scaffolds followed by implantation.
An exciting alternative approach is to deliver cells and drugs for tissue engineering by injecting them as thermally sensitive hydrogels.
We focus on biodegradable copolymers containing hydrophobic and hydrophilic blocks that are soluble in water. Such polymers are surfactants and do form micelles in water. The solubility of the polymers is dependent on temperature and this is the driving force for gelation.
