Micro-systems are becoming increasingly important in a variety of new applications in the electronic, medical and high-tech industries. The development of improved (more robust) micro-systems in which micro-mechanical (valves or piezo’s) and micro-fluidic elements (thin films) dynamically interact with each other will become of major importance for the successful development of future technologies such as (advanced) inkjet printing. Moreover, new materials and concepts for micro-cooling need to be devised to meet the ever increasing demands from the micro-electronic industries. Fast sensing and actuating with ultra-high precision (for instance for 2D and 3D printing) is an important area as well demanding for the development of completely new (integrated) sensing and actuating principles.
